San Mateo’s most exciting restaurant is All Spice, an eclectic, contemporary eatery from Executive Chef Sachin Chopra. Chef Chopra expertly blends the freshness of Californian ingredients with Indian spices to create an entirely new style of cuisine, at once light, familiar and warmly exotic. All Spice is proud to have been awarded a Michelin star, a distinction reserved for cuisine of the very best quality and consistency. The restaurant is housed in a converted Victorian with beautiful hardwood floors, a fireplace and a variety of architectural details. Each of three intimate dining rooms is decorated in bold, shimmering hues accented with gold. Thirty seats are scattered throughout. Professional service and a thoughtful, moderately priced wine list complement Chopra's dishes. To book reservations for parties of 5 or more, please call the restaurant directly.

Had a great date night here. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was very laid back. The service was perfect and we will definitely come back again.

Incredible elegant with a variety of dishes in a restaurant that still manages to seem homey. The wait staff took extreme care of my party's dietary restrictions, and made sure to check up on us fluidly.I would highly recommend asking your waiter/waitress for recommendations, as they are highly knowledgeable of the menu and comprehensive pairings across courses.

First time for their prix fixe lunch (I've eaten dinner here before). Absolutely spectacular. One of the best meals I've had, period.

Loved my experience here and look forward to coming back in the future. Everything was delicious and the service was exceptional! The dessert my husband ordered reminded me of the enchanted rose from Beauty and the Beast but better because it was chocolate heaven. It was beautiful and the taste was magical. We also ordered the venison and beef cheeks and I'm pretty sure I was dancing in my seat the food was so good. Would highly recommend coming here for a nice dinner out.

If you're in San Mateo and looking for a place to take your date...this is the restaurant you want to be at. The fusion Indian-New American cuisine is superb and delicious. It's food you want to photograph then eat. Then eat the photograph. That good. Bravo to the owner, the chef and the staff. Everything is spot on; from the location, decor, service and food... Oh and the menu changes every few months... Can't wait to come back again!

We came to "All Spice" to celebrate a special event in our life. We only recently learned about their Michelin award. Amazing! Lunch was great because they provided their PreFix menu. The cost was very reasonable for only $35 which includes tax and gratuity. They offered two options for each course of their prefix. We both shared the salad and mushroom soup. For the main course, I had the cod, while my Sweetie had black rice vegetarian sandwich. And for dessert, their homemade ice cream hit home run. Very delicious! I like their decor. Reminded me of Moulin Rouge. A bit hippy, a bit bohemian, with a twist of East Asian and Modern Indian theme! Their service here was excellent. Very attentive. We're going to have to come back for more and explore their dinner menu. I was told that their lamb is fantastic. Cheers!

Cosy and elegant setting with welcoming feel. Upscale but not stuffy.Food was inventive and delicious. Skews toward the adventuresome with cross-cultural flavors and presentations. Food was fresh and plenty of interesting vegetable-centric offerings. Delicious seasonings and sauces.Staff was welcoming and helpful; they were able to accommodate some mix and match requests from the menu. They paired a glass of wine excellently with my spicy scallop dish.

The hostess set the tone and welcomed my wife, son and me for our first visit here. Dining room is homey and intimate. Servers were attentive without being intimidating. Food was beautifully prepared. Very special. Don't skip dessert.

I wouldn't cal it indian but a definite foodie place. All foods we tasted and it was fresh and taste so good. The deserts too are so well done.

Outstanding food preparation and presentation. Unique fusion menu. Intimate, relaxed environment, located in a small home converted to restaurant. A table in the front room, near the fireplace adds to a special atmosphere. Restaurant location behind other small retail and across the street from residential, might at first be off-putting, however do not let that deter you from enjoying one of the best restaurants in mid-peninsula.

I swear this kitchen replaced their cookbooks with spell books! Every bite was magical!

Love the take on vegetarian items. Ratatouille had a different flavour in every bite.

This place had amazing dishes. It provides such a unique atmosphere since the setting is in a small house. Outside of the general menu they have a chefs tasting menu which is recommended for the full experience

This place provides extraordinary service and enjoyable food. The best restaurant in the area. The meals came out rapidly and the prices are economical. Recommended.

An enjoyable place for dinner with friends. Totally awesome and unique entree selections.

Adorable indoor decor, phenomenon service manner, and off-street parking space available. Love the appetizers, we ordered the special - quail and wildwood mushrooms which was our top favorites. For the entrees, we ordered gnocchi, pork belly, and the fish with wagyu beef fat. The last one is the best, the fish fillet is really fresh, tender, and juicy as well; also the kale and green beans stands out by themselves. They did offer us bite sized marble cake with chocolate cream as parting gift. Overall, it’s a great fine dining place in peninsula area.

Prix fixe menu offering either a 3 or 5 course selections. We found the pan-seared scallops, slow-roasted duck and chicken-pea Panisse to be interesting. The tenderloin steak was tasty. Our expectations were not fully met as we couldn’t discern that the flavor of the entrees were induced by the preparation, but rather by the heavy sauces. Set in a cute little Victorian house just off El Camino in San Mateo. Seating is divided in the little rooms, giving a cozy, homey feeling. The dishes are unusual and very tasty. This is a high-end restaurant.

Beautiful sitting arrangements with dim lights. Perfect for special occasions. High end restaurant.

Fine dining in a small setting. Innovative cuisine. Great service. Has become an annual pilgrimage...

It no longer has a Michelin star, but the food is quite good and the very reasonable corkage fee ($15) makes this a pretty solid choice for the Peninsula.

Exquisite food. Garnet yam-sage gnocchi. Study in chocolate! Really great food. Cozy place, nice atmosphere.

Really amazing flavors and experience. I was surprised by the portion size, figuring it would be more of a tasting menu - it's not, it filled is both. Though choosing the 5 course over the 3 had the benefit of allowing us to try more even if we couldn't finish everything.

Marvelous hidden gem. Wonderful surprises throughout the meal- beginning with an amuse bouche, warm bread with almond butter, and delightful service. Great wine list, not huge but hits the spot. Now open on Sunday and Monday nights too. Love the super cozy setting, we had a spot by the fireplace. We are so lucky to have this restaurant in San Mateo. Perfect for a special occasion, well worth seeking out.

Informal fine dining with a savory comfort-food-with-a-twist menu. I don't know that I would call it a $$$$ restaurant; I've had much less interesting meals for just as much (a little over $100/head including tip for appetizers/entree/dessert/wine) at garden variety hipster restaurants in San Francisco. A great date restaurant. The "wine on draft" is a saucy, very reasonably priced red that is perfect for savory dishes. The entrees and appetizers are filling/not small; don't know about the tasting menu. Not sure if I would tire of the menu if I visited frequently, but this would be a terrific once every few months stop, or more frequently if your friend/SO is enthusiastic. The malted chocolate kulfi: I am not a dessert eater in general, but wow. Unbelievable string of foodgasms.
Tess Filling
Excellent service, decent vegetarian options.

My wife and I really loved our meal at All Spice. It definitely lived up to its reputation. The service was fantastic, and the food was wonderfully executed. The best part of the restaurant really must be the location though. It's set in an unassuming home, just off El Camino Real. You would never think there's a Michelin-starred gem tucked away inside. I would highly recommend this place! Our dinner included:- Pecan sourdough bread with seaweed butter. I don't usually like sourdough bread, but this was probably the best sourdough I've ever had- Amuse bouche: Eggplant wrapped in zucchini, topped with beet puree- Tamarind glazed scallops with charred hearts of Palm and shrimp mousse- Hen of the woods mushrooms with crunchy enoki, truffle foam on a bed of pine nuts- Striped bass with quinoa- Steak and bone served with pureed potato and daikon radish

Excellent environment and very welcoming service. The food was crisp and yummy. Will surely recommend this place to my friends. Convenient rates and big portions. Keep it up.

The whole experience was amazing. It's set in an old victorian house converted into a chef restaurant. each room has no more then 3 tables. gives a very intimate dinning experience. We choose the 'sample chef's tasting menu' and were not disappointed. 6 course meal which was work of an artist. One of the best I've ever had! It's ain't cheap, but a meal I'll remember for a long time

Hands down the best restaurant on the peninsula! The food is always amazing, service is highly knowledgeable and attentive. This is our go-to for special nights out.Food is high end, fresh and ingredient focused but the techniques the chef uses to turn up the flavors and textures are mind blowing. Things usually have an eastern flair but this is not standard Indian food nor is it standard "fusion" food. The menu evolves regularly but you are always going to be happy with a scallop appetizer and a sea bass entrée but don't let that sear you away from the other great options.

Really fun fine dining experience. The ambiance is a little dated in my opinion but it's part of the charm of the restaurant being located inside an early 1900s house. The food was delicious though. My friend and I opted for the 3 course meal and that was more than enough while my husband got the 5 course and had enough to share around the table. The black cod crudo was my favorite dish but the bread and butter was also a top runner - and it wasn't even its own course. Photo of the menu attached for anyone curious.

Very interesting food! A blend of flavors you might not think to put together. Beautiful presentation. It seems that the Indian influence/flavor is less than it was a few years back but still wonderful.

Dinner as both food and a work of art. Located in a charming little victorian in the middle of a small parking lot (!), decorated in a quirky yet cozy manner. Owned by a married couple; he's the chef-artist and she runs the front of the house and is sommelier. You arrive to a warm greeting which sets the tone for the delights to come. Both tasting menu and a la carte options are available. Each course is a complex assembly of ingredients and tastes, meticulously constructed. One can only imagine the time and effort that went into the experimentation required to achieve the delicious results.
